Choosing the right plastic sheet is one of the most important decisions in any fabrication, signage or product development project. Get it wrong and you end up with cracked panels, cloudy surfaces, or a material that is far more expensive than it needs to be. RIVER PEOPLE PLEXIGLASS (RP), a China-based sheet manufacturer with over 30 years of experience, produces acrylic (PMMA), PETG and ABS sheets every day for importers, wholesalers and project buyers around the world. In this guide we compare the three materials side by side so you can match the right one to your application, your budget and your production process.
The quick comparison: acrylic vs PETG vs ABS
Each material has a different balance of clarity, impact strength, chemical resistance and formability. There is no single “best” sheet — there is only the best fit for your job.
- Acrylic (PMMA): best optical clarity (up to 92% light transmission), stiff and scratch-resistant, affordable and easy to polish. Lower impact strength — it can crack under sharp impact.
- PETG: excellent impact strength (roughly 20–30x higher than acrylic in many grades), good clarity, and very easy to thermoform, print and glue. Surface is softer and scratches more easily.
- ABS: tough, durable and impact-resistant, ideal for structural and industrial parts. It is opaque only — no optical clarity — but it paints and prints extremely well.
When to choose acrylic (PMMA)
Choose acrylic when your priority is clarity, appearance and UV stability. Acrylic keeps its transparency outdoors for years when produced with UV-resistant grades, which is why it dominates signage, display and architectural glazing markets.
- Signage, letters, POS and retail displays that need a brilliant, glass-like finish.
- Lighting covers, diffusers and light guide panels where light transmission matters.
- Aquarium viewing panels and water engineering — cast acrylic up to 300 mm thick, edge-bonded to size.
- Protective covers, machine glazing and skylights where optical quality is the priority.
When to choose PETG
Choose PETG when you need impact resistance plus formability and clarity. PETG is the workhorse for applications that take hits but still need to look good — and it does not require drying before thermoforming the way some other sheets do.
- Machine safety guards and CNC enclosures that must survive impact without shattering.
- Medical device housings and protective shields that demand clean, formable sheet.
- Retail displays, kiosks and exhibition booths that combine shaping with durability.
- Food-contact and display applications where FDA-compliant grades are required.
When to choose ABS
Choose ABS when the part is structural, the surface will be painted or printed, and transparency is not needed. ABS offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, good low-temperature impact resistance and a surface that accepts coatings beautifully.
- Automotive interior parts, dashboard components and transportation panels.
- Appliance housings, power tool bodies and industrial enclosures.
- Luggage, cases, toys and consumer products that see heavy handling.
- Vacuum-formed structural parts where dimensional stability matters.
A fast decision checklist by application
- Need optical clarity + light weight + UV resistance? → acrylic (PMMA).
- Need impact strength + clarity + formability? → PETG.
- Need structural toughness + paintable surface, no transparency? → ABS.
- Outdoor long-term exposure? → specify UV-stabilized acrylic or polycarbonate, not standard ABS.
- Chemical or high-temperature environment? → confirm the grade with your supplier before ordering.
What to check before you place an order
Whichever material you choose, confirm four things with your supplier before ordering: thickness tolerance, masking film protection, color consistency across batches, and realistic MOQ for your project size. At RP we produce cast and extruded acrylic, PETG and ABS sheets from 2 mm to 300 mm, and we CNC-cut, drill, bend, polish and bond panels to your drawings. For signage, machine guarding and aquarium projects we ship ready-to-install panels with installation guidance — so you receive more than raw sheet, you receive a working solution.
