Can You Laser Cut ABS Sheet?

The answer to can you laser cut ABS depends on extraction, not on the laser tube. The question can you laser cut ABS is usually asked by someone who has already cut acrylic successfully and assumes the same settings will work. They will not, and the reason is not optical.

ABS melts rather than vaporises cleanly under a laser, and the smoke carries styrene and, at high temperatures, hydrogen cyanide. The cut is achievable. The extraction is mandatory.

Can you laser cut ABS safely, and at what settings?

A CO2 laser at 10.6 micrometres couples well to ABS. The beam melts a narrow kerf and the assist gas blows the melt out. The edge comes out with a thin recast layer and a slight ridge at the bottom, which is normal for ABS and can be trimmed or sanded if the part is cosmetic.

What differs from acrylic is the smoke. Acrylic vaporises into gases that a modest extractor handles. ABS produces sticky particulate that clogs filters quickly, and the fumes must be exhausted outside or passed through a multi-stage filter with a gas stage, not just a particle stage.

Settings that work as a starting point

  • 2 mm ABS: 40 to 60 per cent power, 8 to 12 mm per second, 2 to 3 bar air assist.
  • 3 mm ABS: 55 to 70 per cent power, 6 to 9 mm per second.
  • 5 to 6 mm ABS: 75 to 90 per cent power, 3 to 5 mm per second, two passes are often cleaner than one.
  • Focus: at or slightly below the surface for thick sheet to keep the kerf narrow.

These are starting points for a 60 to 80 W machine, not a recipe. Every tube, lens and material batch shifts them. Cut a test square on the actual sheet before running a panel.

Extraction, filtration and the safety case

Run ABS only with fume extraction rated for the material, ducted to outside air or through a filter with a gas stage. Do not cut ABS in a shared machine without checking what the previous job was, and never leave an ABS job unattended.

Keep a small water mist or air assist running to reduce flaming, and clean the bed after each job. The sticky residue left by ABS accumulates and becomes a fire load.

When to saw or route instead

Straight cuts, large panels and any part where the edge will be visible are usually better sawn or routed. A saw leaves a clean machined edge with no recast layer, and a router holds positional accuracy across a 2 m panel.

The laser wins on internal cutouts, fine lettering, prototype quantities and shapes that would need a custom jig on a router. For a 200-off housing with a rectangular aperture, routing with a template is usually faster and cheaper.

Material choice next to the process

ABS sheet for laser work should be a standard extrusion grade with a smooth surface. High-impact or flame retardant grades can cut differently because the additives change melt behaviour, so test them separately.

Where the part also has to pass an enclosure standard, the flame rating belongs on the drawing as well; our note on ABS sheet manufacturing and UL ratings covers what to specify.

River People supplies ABS sheet in 1 to 6 mm in black, white and custom colours, cut by saw, router or die, with the cut method matched to the part rather than to the machine that happens to be free.

Send the part drawing, thickness and quantity to oversales@rpplexiglass.com and we will advise whether laser, saw or router suits the geometry and quote can you laser cut ABS parts accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser cutting ABS safe?

It is safe with proper extraction. ABS fumes contain styrene and can contain hydrogen cyanide at high temperature, so the machine must be ducted outside or filtered with a gas stage, and the job must never be left unattended.

What power should I use to laser cut 3 mm ABS?

On a 60 to 80 W CO2 laser, start around 55 to 70 per cent power at 6 to 9 mm per second with air assist. Cut a test square on the actual sheet before running the production panel.

Why does my laser-cut ABS edge look rough?

ABS melts rather than vaporises, so a thin recast layer and a bottom ridge are normal. Reduce power and increase speed slightly, or switch to sawing or routing if the edge is visible.
