ABS Plastic Sheet for Equipment Housing

Choosing an ABS plastic sheet for equipment housing is a grade decision before it is a price decision. A laboratory instrument maker had been moulding housings in a general purpose ABS and losing 6 per cent of parts to cracking around the screw pockets in winter shipments. The material data sheet was correct. The grade was simply the cheapest one available.

ABS plastic sheet manufacturer selection is a grade question before it is a price question. The difference between a general purpose and a high-impact grade shows up in exactly that failure: cold-weather cracking at a stress concentration.

Which ABS plastic sheet for equipment housing

General purpose ABS suits flat covers, bezels and indoor panels. High-impact grades add rubber content for parts that see knocks, low temperatures or thin walls at screw pockets. Flame retardant grades are used where the enclosure sits near mains voltage and the end product standard requires it.

  • 2 mm: bezels, light covers, small flat panels.
  • 3 mm: the workhorse thickness for instrument housings and covers.
  • 4 to 5 mm: large housings, vacuum-formed shells and parts with deep draws.
  • Grade: general purpose for covers, high impact for shells, FR where the standard demands it.

Texture, gloss and the finish that hides handling

A matte or fine-texture ABS surface hides fingerprints, minor scuffs and the flow marks that appear on a formed shell. A high-gloss surface shows every one of them, and on a benchtop instrument it will look worn within a month of daily use.

Texture is set by the sheet or by the mould. If the housing is vacuum formed over a male mould, the texture has to come from the sheet, so specify it on the material order rather than hoping the tool provides it.

Colour matching across a production run

ABS colours are masterbatch based, and small colour differences between batches are normal. For a product line, approve a physical chip and require the manufacturer to hold the masterbatch reference for repeat orders.

Black and white are the easiest to hold. Mid-greys and instrument beiges are the hardest, because a half-step shift is visible next to an existing unit in the field. Order the whole launch quantity in one production run where possible.

Forming, machining and assembly detail

ABS vacuum forms at 150 to 170 degrees Celsius and machines well with sharp tooling. The two assembly details that cause most field failures are sharp internal corners at screw pockets and over-tight fixings that pre-stress the part.

Radius internal corners to at least 1.5 times the wall thickness, use a thread-forming screw rather than a self-tapping one in thin walls, and leave a small clearance in the screw pocket so the part can move with temperature.

For parts that must also sit beside acrylic windows or PETG covers, the material comparison in acrylic versus PETG versus ABS selection sets out where each material belongs, and ABS sheet weight per square metre helps with freight estimates.

What to put on the sheet order

Grade, thickness with tolerance, colour reference, surface texture, sheet size, quantity and the packing method. Add the forming method, because a sheet intended for deep vacuum forming needs different melt strength from one that will be cut flat.

River People supplies ABS sheet from 1.5 to 6 mm in black, white, grey and custom colours, in matte or textured finishes, with masterbatch held for repeat production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness ABS sheet for an equipment housing?

Three millimetres covers most instrument housings and covers. Use 4 to 5 mm for large vacuum-formed shells or parts with deep draws, and 2 mm only for bezels and small flat panels.

Which ABS grade resists cold-weather cracking?

A high-impact grade with added rubber content. General purpose ABS can crack at screw pockets in low temperatures, which is the most common winter failure in instrument housings.

Can ABS sheet be supplied in a custom colour?

Yes, via masterbatch. Approve a physical chip and have the manufacturer hold the masterbatch reference, because small batch-to-batch shifts are normal and greys and beiges show them most.
