Selecting acrylic for a large aquarium viewing window is a multi-step engineering decision. RIVER PEOPLE PLEXIGLASS (RP) has supplied aquarium acrylic panels for over 30 years. Here is the decision chain our engineering team follows.
Step 1: Determine Water Depth
Water depth is the single biggest factor in panel thickness. Deeper water = more hydrostatic pressure = thicker acrylic required.
- 0-1m depth: 20-30mm acrylic
- 1-2m depth: 40-60mm acrylic
- 2-3m depth: 80-120mm acrylic
- 3-5m depth: 150-250mm acrylic
- 5m+: 250mm+ engineered panels
Step 2: Panel Size and Span
Wider panels need more thickness and structural support. Maximum monolithic panel width is limited by casting size; larger windows are bonded from multiple panels.
Step 3: Support and Framing
Panel edges must be captured in structural framing (aluminum, stainless steel or concrete rebate). Edge clearance and compression gasket design are critical.
Step 4: Edge Finish
Edges are diamond-polished and stress-relieved. Polished bevels reduce light refraction and stress concentration.
Step 5: Fabrication and Bonding
Large windows are assembled from multiple cast panels bonded with acrylic cement. Bond strength matches parent material.
Step 6: Shipping and Installation
Thick acrylic panels are heavy and require crating, climate-controlled shipping and professional installation. We provide installation drawings and supervision worldwide.
