“Why did the water spill over the glass edge but the view still looks wrong?” That is the question a client put to us after their infinity pool glazing arrived. The truth behind it is that an infinity pool acrylic panel is not a decoration clipped to the edge; it is the structural weir that contains the water while the overflow runs past its face, and getting that wrong shows up as leakage, haze and stress marks within a season.
What an infinity panel actually has to do
At the overflow edge the water is at its deepest and the glass takes the full head while its face is constantly wet. The acrylic infinity pool panel must therefore be cast for the water depth at that edge, machined so the top is dead-level to give an even overflow line, and edged so the gasket seals without point loading. A panel that is flat enough for a retaining wall is not necessarily level enough for an infinity edge.

The two faults that ruin the edge
Fault one is an out-of-true top edge. If the acrylic infinity pool panel is not milled to a continuous straight line, the overflow runs in waves and the edge reads as uneven from the terrace. Fault two is the frame clamping a soft gasket unevenly, so one corner carries all the load and the acrylic crazes. Both are avoided by factory machining the panel and by delivering a mating frame drawing rather than leaving fit-up to guesswork.
The edge and joint discipline on an infinity weir is the same family of technique used in deep tanks; see our guide on acrylic underwater tunnel sections for how machined edges and controlled clamping hold large water loads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the infinity panel need to be extra thick?
A: Yes, at the weir the water is at its full depth, so thickness is set by that head and the span, typically thicker than the pool floor glazing.
Q: How is the overflow edge kept even?
A: The top edge is factory-milled to a continuous straight line and the frame clamps through a continuous gasket to avoid point loads.
Q: Can the panel be shipped as one piece?
A: Yes; large infinity panels can be cast and shipped as a single piece, with edge protection and crating engineered for the size.
