Acrylic Sheet 5mm: Price & Uses

Every acrylic sheet 5mm price contains five separate costs, and most quotations show only the total. Two quotes for the same 5 mm acrylic landed on a buyer desk in the same week: 41 dollars per sheet and 63 dollars per sheet, both for 1220 by 2440 mm clear cast. The difference was not margin. It was grade, tolerance, masking, cutting and freight terms, none of which appeared on either quotation.

Acrylic sheet 5mm price is a stack of five costs. Buyers who compare only the total are comparing different products.

What drives the acrylic sheet 5mm price

Cast sheet costs more to make than extruded, and the price gap is real. Cast 5 mm has better optical quality, less stress and better machining behaviour; extruded 5 mm is adequate for signage and display work where the panel is not bonded or thermoformed.

Within cast, there is a second gap between general purpose and UV-stabilised grades, and a third between clear and colour. A neutral grey or a bronze tint costs more than clear because the colour batch is smaller and the colour control is tighter.

Cost two: size and how it nests

Sheet price per square metre hides the yield question. A 1220 by 2440 mm sheet cuts into four 610 by 1220 mm panels with almost no waste. A 1000 by 2000 mm sheet might cut the same panels with 12 per cent waste, which changes the effective price per finished part.

  • 1220 by 2440 mm: the standard container-friendly size for 5 mm.
  • 1250 by 2450 mm: common in European specification, similar yield.
  • 1830 by 3660 mm: fewer joints on large fascia work, higher handling cost.
  • 2030 by 3050 mm: jumbo format, usually special order and slower lead time.

Cost three: tolerance and thickness honesty

A 5 mm nominal sheet may be delivered at 4.6 mm by a supplier working to a loose standard and at 5.0 mm by one working to a tight band. The cheap sheet contains less polymer per square metre, so it is cheaper for a reason that has nothing to do with efficiency.

For a bonded or load-bearing part, that 0.4 mm matters. For a poster frame, it does not. Match the tolerance to the job, and put the tolerance on the order.

Cost four: cutting, polishing and masking

Cutting is usually quoted per panel or per linear metre, polishing per edge, and masking as an extra film. On a small order these services can add more than the material. On a container order they become a small percentage.

Ask for the cut list with the price so the yield is visible. A supplier who quotes per sheet and cuts badly can cost more in waste than a supplier who quotes per finished panel.

Cost five: packing and freight terms

Acrylic travels well if it is packed vertically with edge protection and interleaved, and badly if it is stacked flat on a pallet with weight on the middle. Freight terms decide who pays for the difference: EXW, FOB and CIF produce three very different landed costs from the same factory price.

For a first order, compare landed cost, not unit price. Our note on acrylic and PC export packing and shipping explains the packing standard to insist on, and the RFQ checklist for importers shows what to put in the enquiry so the quotes are comparable.

The cheap sheet that costs more later

The common false economy at 5 mm is buying extruded sheet for a job that will be bonded or thermoformed. It machines with more stress, bonds less reliably and can craze at a joint within months. The saving on the sheet is spent on rework.

River People quotes 5 mm cast acrylic per finished panel with grade, tolerance, masking and packing stated separately, so the number a buyer compares is the number that arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 5 mm acrylic sheet cost?

Clear cast 5 mm in 1220 by 2440 mm typically sits in the middle of the sheet price range, with colour, UV grade, cutting and packing each adding a visible line. Ask for a per-panel price so yield is included.

Is 5 mm extruded acrylic cheaper than cast?

Yes, usually by a noticeable margin. It suits flat signage and display work, but is a poor choice for bonded or thermoformed parts because of higher internal stress.

Why is my 5 mm sheet measuring under 5 mm?

Because the supplier is working to a loose thickness tolerance. Cast sheet is often specified with a minus band; put the tolerance you need on the order and verify with a micrometer at five points on arrival.
