Acrylic and polycarbonate sheet are tough materials, but they are much softer than glass, and most of the scratches you see on installed panels are not from abuse – they are from cleaning. Wrong cleaners, abrasive cloths and bad habits cause hazing, stress cracking and permanent marks. This guide explains how to clean and maintain plastic sheet correctly, what to avoid, and when minor damage can be repaired.

Two properties change everything about maintenance:
- Softness: acrylic and PC are softer than glass, so anything abrasive – scouring pads, dirty cloths, even some paper towels – will leave micro-scratches that build up into hazing
- Chemical sensitivity: strong solvents and ammonia attack the polymer surface. Ammonia-based glass cleaners are the single most common cause of crazing (fine crack networks) on acrylic, and solvents can soften or cloud both materials
The right routine is gentle and simple, and it protects the panels for years. The wrong routine is often irreversible.
The Correct Cleaning Routine
For routine cleaning, follow these steps:
- Dust first: rinse with clean water or wipe with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth to remove loose grit before anything touches the surface
- Use mild soap: a few drops of dish soap or a dedicated plastic cleaner in lukewarm water is enough. Avoid ammonia, acetone, toluene and solvent-based degreasers
- Wipe gently: use a soft cloth or sponge, rinse frequently, and dry with a clean microfiber cloth
- Work in one direction: circular rubbing is more likely to leave visible swirl marks than straight passes
- For stubborn marks: use a plastic-safe cleaner formulated for acrylic or PC, and test it on a small hidden corner first
Anti-static plastic cleaners are a good option for display windows and light guides, because they reduce the dust attraction that makes panels look dirty quickly.
What Never to Use
If you take one thing from this guide, remember this list of common mistakes:
- Glass cleaners containing ammonia: they cause crazing on acrylic and can cloud polycarbonate
- Abrasive pads, steel wool or gritty cloths: they scratch the surface permanently
- Strong solvents: acetone, toluene, thinners and alcohol-heavy products attack the polymer
- High-pressure washers aimed at sheet edges: they can force water between laminates or under the masking film and lift edges
- Dry wiping with dirty cloths: any embedded grit becomes sandpaper
For polycarbonate, take extra care: it scratches more easily than acrylic. If your PC panels have a scratch-resistant hard coat, only use non-abrasive cleaners so the coating is not worn away.
Outdoor Panels and Long-Term Maintenance
Exterior glazing, signage and roofing panels face UV, rain and pollution. A simple maintenance schedule keeps them looking new:
- Clean outdoor panels two to four times a year, more often near coastlines or busy roads where salt and grime accumulate
- Inspect edges and sealants: stress cracks usually start at drilled holes and clamped edges, so check fasteners are not over-tightened (plastic expands with heat, so it must not be clamped rigidly)
- Check UV protection: acrylic manufactured with UV protection resists yellowing; without it, prolonged sun exposure will degrade the surface over time
- Trim nearby vegetation and avoid chemical overspray from fertilizers or paint onto the panels
Can Scratches Be Repaired?
Not every mark means replacement. Surface scratches on acrylic can often be polished out using fine abrasive compounds or flame polishing carried out by a fabricator, restoring optical clarity. Deeper gouges, stress cracks and damaged edges are usually not worth repairing – a cracked panel that stays in service can fail under load, so replace it. Polycarbonate is harder to polish back to optical clarity, which is another reason to protect its surface from the start.
