Walk any high street or shopping mall and the brand boards, channel letters, lightboxes and display cases are, in the vast majority, made from acrylic. After two decades in the sheet industry I can tell you this is not an accident of cost – it is a deliberate engineering choice. When a retail chain rolls out fifty new stores, the storefront material has to be lightweight, bright, and identical in every location. Acrylic delivers all three.

The comparison buyers should make is acrylic against glass, because glass is the material everyone instinctively pictures for a shop window or display case:
- Weight – a 6 mm acrylic panel weighs roughly half of the equivalent glass, so storefitters can handle it by hand and fix it with lighter frames
- Impact – acrylic is far more resistant to breakage than annealed glass; a dropped display or a trolley strike is a repair, not a shattered window
- Brightness – with around 92 percent light transmission, a backlit acrylic sign looks vivid and even, giving the brand its clean luminous identity
- Formability – acrylic can be CNC-cut, laser-engraved, edge-polished and heat-bent into 3D letters and shaped panels that glass simply cannot do at this cost
Where the material is used
In practical retail terms you will find acrylic in four places. First, the illuminated fascia: channel letters and lightboxes where the sheet is backlit to glow with the brand colour. Second, window displays and table-top display cases, where the clarity of the sheet makes products look sharper than behind plain glass. Third, in-store POS and shelf risers, where clear or coloured acrylic turns a shelf into a merchandising unit. Fourth, protective display covers for valuables, where an acrylic hood keeps an item secure and visible at the same time. Each of these uses exploits a different strength of the material – transmission, formability or impact safety.
The problems in today’s market
The pain points I see repeat across the retail fit-out industry are almost always the same. First, some contractors buy ‘acrylic’ that is really a cheap, non-UV-stabilised sheet: it yellows, crazes and loses clarity within a year of outdoor exposure, and the brand ends up redoing the whole storefront. Second, price-driven sourcing produces inconsistent colour between batches, so a chain’s logos differ slightly from store to store. Third, shops that use glass for large display cases pay for heavy shipping, fragile handling and expensive specialised glazing labour. Fourth, and most quietly damaging, many buyers do not know the difference between cast and extruded acrylic, so they pay for a premium grade they do not need, or buy a budget grade for a job that will not last.
Our advantage and solution
This is where a manufacturing partner with real control makes the difference. We extrude and cast our own acrylic, so we control the resin, the UV stabilisation and the colour consistency from batch to batch. For a retail rollout we supply optical-quality clear sheet and a full standard colour range, pre-cut to your store sizes, with polished edges and drilled fixing holes already done. We quote against your exact drawings and keep production tolerances tight, so store fifty matches store one. And we advise on the right grade – UV-stabilised for outdoor fascias, standard clear for indoor displays – before you commit. If you tell us the application and the store location, we can also flag the thickness that will stop a large backlit panel from bowing.
If you are planning a store fit-out, signage refresh or display programme, send your sizes and designs to oversales@rpplexiglass.com for a quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should acrylic signage be?
Thin panels for channel letters typically run 2-5 mm, while large backlit fascia panels need more – usually 3-6 mm or thicker depending on area. We recommend thickness by panel size and mounting so a big sign does not bow.
Will acrylic signage yellow outdoors?
Standard sheet can yellow in sunlight. For outdoor fascias and channel letters we supply UV-stabilised acrylic that keeps its clarity and colour for years of exposure.
Can you supply acrylic cut to our store sizes?
Yes. We CNC-cut, edge-polish and drill panels to your store drawings, so a chain rollout arrives as finished components that match from store to store.
