“Transparent” is not the whole story when you specify a plastic sheet. Color and surface finish decide how the final product looks, how it diffuses light, and how it resists fading outdoors. Getting this right at the enquiry stage avoids a batch that is the wrong tone or the wrong effect. This guide maps the main acrylic and polycarbonate sheet colors and finishes, and shows you how to confirm the exact option with your supplier.

If the application passes light, the grade of clarity changes the look dramatically:
- Water-clear (optical) – the highest clarity, around 92 percent light transmission, used for light guides, premium displays and glazing where tint is unacceptable
- Standard clear – still very transparent, the everyday choice for signage, retail and general fabrication
- Light-diffusing / translucent – milky white or opal panels that spread LED light evenly behind lightboxes, channel letters and illuminated signage, hiding hot spots
- Tinted transparent – smoked, bronze, grey or blue that keeps light transmission while adding privacy and a premium feel, common on machine guards and display cases
For illuminated work, the diffusing grade matters more than the color code: a properly chosen opal sheet turns a row of LEDs into one even panel. Tell your supplier whether the panel will be backlit so they can recommend transmission, not just a name.
Frosted, Satin and Textured Surfaces
Surface texture changes both look and function:
- Frosted / satin – a soft, non-glare surface that still transmits light, ideal for office partitions, shower screens and printed backlit panels
- Anti-glare – matte surfaces that cut reflections on screens, instruments and museum cases
- Embossed or textured – decorative patterns and prismatic finishes for architectural and display use
Frosting is available as a pre-frosted sheet or as a surface treatment on clear sheet, which lets you mix matte and clear areas in one panel.
Coloured and Mirror Sheets
Beyond clear and frosted, suppliers stock a broad colour range:
- Solid colours – black, white, red, blue, green, yellow, orange and grey in opaque or translucent grades; white and black are the fastest-moving
- Mirror finish – silver, gold and coloured mirror acrylic with a vacuum-metallised back, used for decorative panels, furniture and display props
- Pearlescent and metallic – special-effect sheets for premium signage and interiors
- Colour-matching – for brand projects, panels can be matched to a RAL or Pantone code, or to a physical sample, usually from a minimum order quantity
For outdoor colour that stays true, ask about UV-stabilised grades and UV co-extruded layers, which slow fading and yellowing far better than standard sheet – our UV and yellowing guide explains the difference.
How to Confirm Color and Finish in Your Enquiry
To avoid a wrong batch, specify the finish precisely:
- State the effect: clear, optical, frost, solid colour, mirror, or a specific RAL/Pantone code
- Say whether the panel is backlit or surface-lit – this decides between diffusing and clear
- Indicate both faces: some applications need a matte outer face and glossy inner face
- Request a colour chart or physical sample before production for colour-critical orders
- For large runs, confirm whether the colour is a stock item or needs custom matching (which adds MOQ and lead time)
