Aquarium-Grade Cast Acrylic: Thick Sheet Sourcing Guide

There is a short list of materials a public aquarium engineer will trust with several tonnes of water against a pane of glazing. Aquarium-grade cast acrylic sits on that list because it is polymerised from monomer into a homogeneous block with low internal stress, no bubbles, and optical clarity that holds for decades. Extruded sheet, and ordinary cast sheet sold without an aquarium grade, do not belong in that calculation.

What makes cast acrylic aquarium-grade

Aquarium-grade material is cell cast in controlled conditions, so the thickness is uniform and the internal stress is low. That matters because water pressure loads the panel over years, not minutes: a stressed panel creeps, and a panel with micro-bubbles is a site where a flaw can grow. Real aquarium panels are cast thick — from 50 mm up to 600 mm for the deepest tunnels and viewing windows — and then machined, polished and bonded into one-piece panels.

Why thickness is set by water depth and span

A large viewing window at 3 m of water can require a cast panel well over 100 mm thick, while a small residential tank may need only 12-15 mm. The right number comes from a pressure calculation, not from a price table. RP River People supplies aquarium-grade cast acrylic sheets and machined panels, and will work from your opening size, water depth and support drawing to confirm the thickness before you order.

For how thickness scales with load, our guide on how thick an acrylic aquarium window should be walks through the calculation, and the joining logic for long runs is in acrylic underwater tunnel sections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What thickness of aquarium-grade cast acrylic do I need?

A: It depends on water depth and the span of the panel. Small tanks may use 12-15 mm, while deep public aquarium viewing windows and tunnels run from 100 mm to 600 mm; submit your opening and depth for a calculation.

Q: Can ordinary cast acrylic be used for an aquarium?

A: Aquarium-grade material is controlled for bubbles, internal stress and thickness uniformity. Using ungraded sheet for a pressurised aquarium window carries long-term risk and is not recommended.

Q: Do you supply panels ready to bond, or just sheet?

A: Both. We supply aquarium-grade cast sheet by container, and machined panels with polished edges ready for bonding or frame installation.
