UV-Resistant Acrylic Sheets: Why Outdoor Projects Need Co-Extruded Protection

When acrylic or polycarbonate sheets are installed outdoors — in noise barriers, skylights, greenhouses, signage, or glazing — one question dominates long-term performance: will the material yellow, crack, or become brittle after years under direct sunlight? The answer depends on whether the sheet has proper UV protection. This guide explains how UV co-extrusion works and what buyers should specify for exterior projects.

Why Acrylic and PC Yellow Outdoors

Both PMMA (acrylic) and polycarbonate are transparent thermoplastics that can be degraded by ultraviolet radiation. Over months and years, UV photons break the molecular chains in the polymer, causing:

  • Yellowing — the transparent sheet develops a warm, amber tint
  • Loss of light transmission — optical clarity drops from 92% to 75% or lower
  • Surface crazing — fine cracks appear on the exposed face
  • Brittleness — impact strength decreases, increasing the risk of breakage

Cast acrylic is naturally more UV-resistant than polycarbonate, but even PMMA benefits from added protection in harsh climates. PC sheets, in particular, require dedicated UV shielding for any outdoor application.

How UV Co-Extrusion Works

UV co-extrusion is a manufacturing process where a thin layer of UV-stabilized acrylic (typically 50–100 microns thick) is bonded onto one or both sides of a polycarbonate sheet during the extrusion process. The UV-resistant layer contains absorbers that block 99.9% of UV rays before they reach the base PC material.

Think of it as sunscreen for the plastic: the protective layer takes the UV hit, while the clear core retains its strength and clarity for 10–15 years outdoors.

One-Sided vs Two-Sided UV Protection

  • One-sided UV co-extrusion: UV layer on one face only. Recommended for applications where one side faces the sky (skylights, roofing, greenhouses). The protected side faces outward; the underside sees minimal UV.
  • Two-sided UV co-extrusion: UV layers on both faces. Required for noise barriers, highway glazing, and any panel that receives sun from both sides (reflected off pavement, water, or adjacent structures). Also necessary for PC sheets used in security glazing where both faces are exposed.

What Buyers Should Specify

When requesting a quote for outdoor acrylic or PC sheets, make sure your supplier confirms:

  • UV co-extruded layer on which side(s) — one or both faces
  • UV absorber type — standard vs. high-performance for tropical/high-altitude regions
  • Guaranteed warranty period — reputable suppliers offer 10-year or 15-year no-yellowing warranties
  • ASTM G154 or ISO 4892 weathering test data — ask for accelerated aging test reports

RP Plexiglass UV Protection Options

At RP Plexiglass, all exterior-grade polycarbonate sheets ship with UV co-extruded protection on the sun-facing side (or both sides, upon request). Our cast acrylic noise barrier panels include a standard UV-stabilized formulation rated for 15+ years of exterior exposure. We can provide weathering test reports and material certificates with every order.
